CHASE TERRY - CYBERCHASE

Chase Terry — CyberChase Austin, TX

I build systems. Some of them are made of light.

A software engineer in Austin, working remotely. I design and build websites, design lighting for venues and performances, and consult on backend and AI systems for small teams. One person, start to finish, on all three.

What I do

03
01 — Build

Websites

Designed and built by one person, start to finish — not handed between a designer, a developer and a project manager.

Single page from $300 · larger sites quoted
  • Sites for businesses, venues, artists and portfolios — hand-built and quick to load, with no page-builder bloat underneath
  • Copy, structure and photography worked out with you rather than guessed at, because the content is what the site actually is
  • Domain, hosting, email and analytics set up and handed over in your name
  • You own the code. No monthly platform tax, no lock-in, no one to call but me — and you could replace me without rebuilding

This site is one of them. View source — it's two files and no dependencies.

02 — Design

Lighting design

For venues, installations, events and performances — concept through commissioning, including the control system that runs it.

Design fee quoted per project · day rate $500 for shows
  • Lighting schemes for venues, retail, events and installations: decide what the room should feel like first, then specify the fixtures that do it
  • Layered design — ambient, task, accent, effect — with colour temperature and rendering that hold up across the whole space
  • Control and programming: DMX, dimming, scene and cue design, and rigs driven from TouchDesigner when a show needs to react rather than replay
  • Laser and projection work, including show design and live operation

The performance side of this runs under the name Cyber Chase — see the showcase →

03 — Consult

Tech consulting

Backend and AI engineering for small teams that need a senior pair of hands, briefly.

$150/hr · project rates available
  • Backend systems: APIs, data models, integrations and the performance work that gets put off until it can't be
  • LLM features built to be maintained — retrieval, evaluation, and agent workflows that don't fall over when the prompt changes
  • Architecture review and honest second opinions before you commit to a direction that's expensive to leave
  • Short engagements welcome. No six-month minimum, no retainer, no pretending a two-week problem is a quarter of work

Here about your house? Home IT, Wi-Fi, smart home setup and residential lighting around Austin are a separate practice with its own rates — hourly, in person, no project minimum.

About

I've spent my career as a software engineer — backend systems, and more recently AI and LLM work. Alongside it I've built an audiovisual practice under the name Cyber Chase: TouchDesigner, lasers, projection, and a lot of patient debugging in the dark.

Those look like separate careers and aren't. A lighting rig that reacts to audio and a backend that stays up under load are the same problem wearing different clothes: state, timing, feedback, and what happens when one piece of it fails at the worst moment. I'd rather understand a system than guess at it, which is slower on the first day and faster every day after.

Based in Austin, Texas, and working remotely — regularly in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Engineering and design work happens from anywhere. Lighting work travels, and I'd rather be in the room for it.

Let's talk about it.

Tell me what you're building or what room you're trying to fix. I'll tell you honestly whether I'm the right person for it — and who might be, if I'm not.
